Surprisingly, regular consumption of a glass of orange juice may benefit heart health. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that drinking 500ml (17 fl oz) of orange juice daily helped improve insulin function, lower blood glucose levels, and reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad cholesterol”—all signs of a healthy heart.

Another study found that drinking orange juice every day for several weeks lowered systolic blood pressure in overweight and obese adults and raised levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good cholesterol.” These findings suggest that, despite its sugar content, a glass of orange juice can support cardiovascular health.

Brain Health and Cognitive Function

A glass of orange juice may also have a positive impact on brain health. One study involved 24 healthy men who drank either 240ml (8 fl oz) of 100% orange juice or a sugary drink with the same calories. After consuming the juice, participants showed improved cognitive function and increased alertness.

For older adults, drinking two glasses of orange juice daily for eight weeks improved cognitive function compared to a placebo drink. These findings suggest that a glass of orange juice may help maintain cognitive health and boost mental alertness, which could be useful for productivity and focus throughout the day.

Flavonoids and Antioxidants in Orange Juice

Orange juice contains flavonoids, a class of antioxidants that provide several health benefits. These compounds help protect the body from oxidative stress, inflammation, and cellular damage. Hesperidin, a flavonoid found in citrus fruits, has been shown to lower blood pressure by promoting blood vessel relaxation. A 2025 study found that drinking orange juice could reduce inflammation and blood pressure by activating genes that help regulate these processes.

Flavonoids in orange juice also support brain function by improving blood flow to the brain. Studies suggest that flavonoids can help prevent cognitive decline and may be beneficial in older adults who experience a decrease in neuronal plasticity.

Is Fresh Orange Juice the Best Choice?

While whole oranges provide more fiber and nutrients than juice, freshly squeezed orange juice retains more health benefits than commercially produced versions. Commercial juices often undergo pasteurization, which can reduce some of their nutrient content. Freshly squeezed juice, on the other hand, preserves the vitamins and flavonoids that provide the most health benefits.

If you enjoy a glass of orange juice, a small serving of 100% juice—without added sugars—is a healthy option. Amati recommends drinking it three or four times a week as part of a balanced diet.
