Islanders Offered Free Diabetes Tests in Jersey

Residents in Jersey can now take free diabetes tests through Coop Pharmacy in partnership with Diabetes Jersey. The program, launched to mark World Diabetes Day, aims to increase early detection and raise public awareness of diabetes risks.

More than 4,500 islanders currently live with type two diabetes. Many cases go undiagnosed, which increases the risk of serious health problems. Regular testing helps identify the condition early and makes it easier to manage.

Early Detection Saves Lives

Sara Kynicos, Head of Care at Coop Pharmacy, said the screenings were a simple but important step in protecting public health. She explained that early diagnosis can prevent severe complications and encourage better lifestyle choices. According to her, the main goal is to help people recognise symptoms sooner and take action.

Testing will be available at Grand Marché in St Helier on 13 November and at Grand Marché in St Peter on 14 November between 09:00 and 17:00 GMT. Each screening takes about ten minutes, giving residents a quick and easy opportunity to check their health.

Simple and Accessible Testing

No appointment is required for the free diabetes tests. People can walk in and receive immediate feedback from trained pharmacists. They will interpret results, offer advice, and answer questions about managing or preventing diabetes. This open approach makes the program accessible to everyone, regardless of age or background.

The pharmacy said the campaign forms part of its broader health awareness initiative. It also supports the message of World Diabetes Day, which encourages communities to take proactive steps toward prevention and control.

Strong Community Support

Peter Tabb from Diabetes Jersey said the initiative plays a crucial role in raising awareness. He noted that free screening removes financial barriers and helps reach those who might otherwise miss out on testing. He added that it also strengthens collaboration between healthcare professionals and the community.

Coop Pharmacy and Diabetes Jersey hope that more islanders will participate and take responsibility for their health. By working together, they aim to reduce the burden of diabetes and build a healthier community for the future.
